Club Fleets

Shrewsbury sails and races seven classes of boats plus a variety of small day sailors and cruising boats. The boats vary from 8 foot Optimist prams to high performance Lasers and Comets, classic Sanderlings and Woodpussy to the competitive but family friendly Flying Scot. C-420

Fleet Captains: Rosie and Bruce Lane

Used extensively throughout North America as a junior, high school and college racing dinghy, the 15 foot 420 is a two person, sloop rigged dinghy with trapeze and spinnaker. Generally used by the more advanced teen sailors and adventuresome seniors! The club owns six hulls and the members maintain another dozen private boats in the fleet.

Laser

Fleet Captain: Phil Arnheiter

The Laser and the smaller rigged Laser Radial are Olympic Class boats sailed competitively around the world. Easy to right, the Laser and Laser Radial are a fast, wet competitive class sailed by juniors, adults and masters alike. SSYC maintains a competitive and growing fleet consisting of both senior and junior sailors.

Comet

Fleet Captain: Jim Brinkman

The Comet has a storied history, designed in 1932 as the "younger" trailerable, brother of the Star class boats. A sloop rigged, hard chine two person boat, SSYC maintains an active fleet. The fleet members sail locally but also travel to regattas throughout the season. In 2008 the Comet North American Championship will be held at SSYC.

Optimist

Fleet Captain: Stuart Van Winkle, PC

A recent article on a leading sailing blog noted that over 50% of the 2008 Olympic sailors started out by sailing in this 8 foot pram used as a trainer by sailing programs world-wide. SSYC maintains a small fleet for instruction but members maintain this fleet with upwards of 40 boats on the water on a busy race day.

Cruising Class

Fleet Captain: Peter Coggins, PC

A variety of cruising boats populate the waters off the SSYC docks. From pocket cruisers to serious offshore boats, we have a variety of classes that enjoy a secure berth on the Shrewsbury, a sail out on the Raritan or just an extended summer cruise with friends and family.

Sanderling

Fleet Captain: Fred Beshore, PC

The 18' Marshall Sanderling maintains quite a following up and down the East Coast, not just at SSYC. Equipped with a cuddy cabin, SSYC sailors cruise and race the boats across the twin rivers and beyond.

Flying Scot

Fleet Captain: Doug Milnes

The Flying Scot is now over 50 years old and still going strong! SSYC Fleet 178 was chartered in 1992 and continues to flourish with over 20 boats 'on the hard' and a regular contingent of 8 to 10 boats on the river to race. A great day sailor and family boat, we dry sail them here at SSYC.

Woodpussy

Fleet Captain: John Quinn

The Woodpussy is an older class that is enjoying a renaissance at SSYC. Sailed single-handed or with a crew, the SSYC fleet is growing with three new boats in just the past year. In 2008, SSYC is hosting the Woodpussy National Championship.
