Junior Sailing Fundraiser a Rousing Success

Happy Junior Sailors The Junior Program wishes to thank all who contributed to the success of the fundraiser held at the club on Saturday evening, June 7th.  Over $3,500 was raised in support of junior sailing at SSYC.  The funding raised will be used to supplement the Junior Programs ongoing capital needs.

The event was well attended and supported by many of our members and parents of junior program sailors.  Fabulous food and spirited libations took a back seat to the 30 plus imaginative, fanciful, practical, and in some instances, comical gift baskets generously donated by our many one-design Fleets and members. Several juniors ably guided by Junior Commodores Dan R. and Geneva O. rolled up their sleeves, got involved and were in attendance to help run the event.

Cool gifts Particular thanks goes out to the event organizers including the Zweig, Ricker, O'Brien, Lane, Van Winkle, Kosinski, Jacobi, Economou, Giblin and Gearon families. Ultimately, the success of this party would not have been possible without them and so many other generous individuals.  Special thanks to all who contributed in so many ways whether by donating a basket, purchasing an attendance or raffle ticket or simply offering time and assistance.

The event also served to showcase our great club and the importance of the Junior Program to many non-member parents and friends alike.  The general buzz was we should plan an event like this again.  Quite possibly, we stand witness today to an annual event in the making. New Members Regatta Blows them Away

newJune 1 - Breezy, balmy and beautiful - you couldn't have asked for a better day on the Shrewsbury as the members - both new and old - set out for a great, fun-filled afternoon of racing on the river. The wind was up and down with good gusts over 20 knots allowing the Flying Scots that participated to get up on an extended plane - with 3 of 4 folks aboard! A big thanks to everyone who participated and to the Race Committee of Amy Milnes, Teri McNab and Gordon Milnes and rescue boats with Eric Spahr, Gordon Donald and his daughter Katie. Opening Reception - Founders Honored but the Honor is Really Ours

foundersMay 24 - It was a glorious night at SSYC. The wind lightened, the sun broke through the clouds, Brother Mac Barnes blessed our fleets and sailors, we gave thanks for another year of wonderful sailing - and we gave thanks to a very special group of individuals. Joining us to celebrate our opening evening and receive our thanks were PC Ed Ryan, Norman Walsh, Thelma Johnson, Margaret Throckmorton Hembling and the Honorable William Throckmorton. It was an amazing sight to see five individuals so much a part of our history gathered together on our deck. After Brother Mac's blessing, the flag officers, led by Commodore Paul Clauss and assisted by, VC Leighton Waters, RC Mike Lyttle plus PC's Bill Van Winkle and Jeff Jacobi, dedicated a plaque to hang in the clubhouse recognizing the founders and their efforts on our behalf. The ceremony concluded with the membership awarding life memberships to Ms. Thelma Johnson, Judge William Throckmorton and Mr. Norman Walsh who now join founders PC Ed Ryan and Margaret Hembling in the Life Member category. Congratulations and welcome to all of our founders and our thanks for your foresight 72 seasons ago.

About Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club

Chartered in 1936, our founders formed the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club to bring together all who enjoy the simple pleasure of the actions of wind, water and sail. Shrewsbury is about its people, about the love of sailing and about the camaraderie that draws sailors together. We are a volunteer organization, run by members for our mutual benefit and for the betterment of the club and the sport of sailing. We work to encourage and preserve the arts of sailing and navigation, maintaining one of the top junior sailing programs in the northeast, and one that has produced many national and international champions. At the same time, we continue to promote a top-flight one-design racing program for both adults and children, sailing seven active fleets from April through October.
