2009 SSYC Junior Sailing Program News & Race Results
OK, it has begun...the starting gun has sounded and we are punching away at the keyboard...just give us a couple to catch up...Pintle and Gudgeon never took typing in high school, so we're still breaking in the new "voice recognition" software. Not really, just send us some copy!
Giblin Continues to Strive at Opti Midwest Championship in Milwaukee
Oct 9-12 - Milwaukee, WI - Junior Opti sailor Audrey Giblin not only loves sailing Optis, she's also not one to back down from a challenge, so it was no surprise that October found her in Milwaukee, WI at the Midwest Championship. Coach Danielle writes "Audrey Giblin went out in freezing cold conditions all weekend and sailed her best regatta to date. Finishing 54th out of 144, Audrey not only secured a spot at the 2010 Team Trials but she also qualified for the US international team that will be heading to Lake Garda, Italy next spring!!!! To add to the excitement, Gibby has also been invited, by LISOT coach Pepe, to join him at an international clinic in Argentina! We couldn't be happier & prouder...!" Nice, very nice.
Shrewsbury Defeats Bay Head to Win 13th Annual Merrick Team Race
August 18 - Bay Head, NJ - Each year we field many teams at events both local and regional to represent SSYC in various special events – Lavallette Team Race, Merrick Team Race, and the Barclay Cup at Little Egg Harbor. One of the more pleasant duties as Jr. Sailing Chair is to recognize such a team of sailors, something we’re doing again this year for the third consecutive year. This year’s award winners consisted of three young women who made up one of two teams we sent to the 13th Annual Samuel Merrick Team Race at Bay Head Yacht Club. This is the 1st time in seven years that Bay Head Yacht Club has not won the event held on their home waters and marks the 1st time that SSYC has won the regatta held in honor of local Barnegat sailing master Samuel Merrick. The winning team consisted of three young ladies who finished the day with only one loss for the event. An envious record at any regatta and one they should take pride in accomplishing. This year’s outstanding team, as winners of the Merrick Team Race, consisted of Emily Kosinski, Audrey Giblin and Kassi Chrysanthopoulos.
The 2009 Junior Sweepstakes Regatta a Success.
Aug. 10-13 - The Two Rivers - Seriously, how can one ever have more fun on two rivers in just four short days? Even the Commodore harkens back to those glorious days as a junior sailor - throwing jelly fish at his sisters as he waited for the races to get underway! Well, those glory days have never gone away and with another Sweeps under our belts it was a great week. A big thanks goes out to everyone involved - including our brothers and sisters at Monmouth Boat Club, Fair Haven Sailing, Rumson Y.C., Atlantic Highlands and Keyport Y.C. It takes a tremendous amount of work to get it done, so when you see a "Sweeps person," let them know you appreciate the effort. See you in 2010!

Nice job guys - and big thanks to Dad and Coach Matt.
420 Team at Nationals in Rhode Island
July 27 - Fort Getty State Park, Jamestown, RI - Hosted by the Conanicut Y.C. - Departing after a few quick races on Sunday, the 420 Team headed to scenic Rhode Island for the Nationals and a lovely New England summer event. Fog, rain, a mix of air, some good races and some bad - but according to Coach Matt, all had a good time amid less than perfect conditions. I mean really, who needs to actually see the mark to round it? '09 420 Nationals

"I want to thank all who participated in the Braveheart Regatta on Saturday. We had a total of 68 participants, nice weather and good racing. I would like to personally thank John Garth, Leighton Waters and the entire SSYC club for helping Rumson CC stage the regatta and bringing many of the participants. As many of you know, I am not a sailor but really enjoy watching my boys sail and interact with others in the sailing community."
The results are out there and we hope to post a link soon....

Barclay Jr. Sailing Team Race
July 17 - Little Egg Harbor Y.C. - SSYC was defending champions of this event, raced continuously since 1928 with the intent of "promoting club loyalty and to encourage sailing among young sailors." More on the day, team and results to come and congratulations to the Bayhead Team on a job well done.
