2010 Event Recap
30-31 Oct - Jack Swikart Places Third at 2010 Cressy Cup
Competing against sailors who had also qualified in regattas from the
seven High School sailing districts around the country, SSYC's Jack Swikart,
sailing for Rumson Fair Haven Regional High School, placed third overall at the
2010 Cressy Cup, the National High School Single Handed Championship Regatta,
Radial division in St. Petersburg, Florida on October 30th and 31st. His photo,
seen here, coming out of a near perfect roll tack, is one of a handful of photos
cycling on the homepage of the Interscholastic Sailing Association's website.

15 Oct - Trevor Koerwer on Runner Up E-Scow National Team
Junior
SSYC member Trevor Koerwer was presented with a great opportunity last month -
sail as crew member on the E-Scow Happy Feet, TO-101 at the E-Scow
Nationals being held at Little Egg Harbor Y.C., where Trevor sails during the
summer months. Never one to pass up a fast ride, Trevor readily agreed and over
the three day event from the 10th through 12th, the team led by skipper Art
Brereton found itself tied for first after the final day's races were cancelled
due to no wind. Unfortunately, the fickle finger of pure math didn't shine on
the team and they finished second in the tie breaker, but that didn't faze
Trevor as evidenced by the smile on his face above! Congratulations Trevor, well
done.
25 Sep - Comet Class Drew Bowl Sailed at SSYC
SSYC -
The Comet Drew Bowl and Class Territory III Championship Regatta was sailed at
SSYC on September 25. Winds were moderate, shifty, and variable out of the
northwest with puffs as high as 15 knots for this three race event. Nine boats
competed in the event - all from SSYC. Looking back at the number of Comets
actively racing in the club only a few short years ago, it's amazing to see the
growth of the class as evident in this regatta. Jeff Jacobi and the Woodpussy
fleet provided race committee and safety boat support, which was fantastic in
light of the shifty winds. Steve and JoAnn Lapp graciously provided support
ashore in preparing and serving lunch for all competitors and race support
teams.
The competition was fierce for this final SSYC Comet Class event of the
season. After the first two races, Pete Schell and Talbott Ingram were tied with
3 points a piece and the next closest competitor was Bob Slook with 6 points.
The final race was a race within a race, with Talbott and Pete constantly
covering each other and practically match racing; almost ignoring the rest of
the fleet for the win. As a result, the third race was won by Mike and Cathy
O'Brien, with Bob and Tom Slook in second, and Talbott and Lee Ingram taking
third. This third place finish gave Talbott and Lee the victory. Other
competitors in this event include: Steve Widdis, Jim Widdis, Brad Meade, Jim
Brinkman, and Stuart VanWinkle. -- J. Brinkman

10 Sep - Annual Meeting, Passing of the Flags and Change of Command
Last evening saw the 2010 annual meeting and passing of the flags. Commodore Mike Lyttle presided, reviewing many of the year's individual chair's accomplishments, thanking all who's efforts made for a great year and most importantly - the power behind the helm, his wife Holly! Elections were held and after welcoming the new flag officers and board members, newly elected Commodore Bernie Kosinski thanked PC Lyttle for his efforts, expressed his excitement over the coming year's 75th anniversary and new BOG and presented PC Lyttle with a beautiful gift as he joins the ranks of what some pundits refer to as the best flag position of all!
06 Sep - Trophy Dinner Honors SSYC's Champions
Our club works on so many levels - what we do at SSYC is race, sail, enjoy each other's company and continue the time honored traditions of the past 74 years. One of these great traditions is the annual trophy dinner. Decked out in their summer sailing finest, senior and junior members alike attended a wonderful dinner organized by Maureen Kearney and Family and a legion of supporters whose efforts were recognized by Commodore Lyttle. A beautiful night, after dinner our champions and special award winners were recognized, bringing another wonderful season to a fitting conclusion as the sun set over the Shrewsbury and Commodore Lyttle wished us fair sailing towards a wonderful 75th anniversary year.
06 Sep - Past Commodores Brunch & Race a Success
Commodore Mike and Holly Lyttle graciously hosted the past commodores and spouses last weekend, treating them to a lovely buffet on the deck, some tasty libations, good music and great conversation. Followed on by the Past Commodore's meeting where PC Skipper Bill Van Winkle, PC '72 reported on the year's activities, particularly the two junior scholarships awarded and plans as we move ahead to do more, encourage the membership and support our mission. Racing followed with a spirited competition resulting in a close race between PCs Ingram, Garth and Clauss with Mr. Clauss squeaking out a victory over past winner PC Ingram. Congrats to the Commodore and Holly for hosting such a wonderful event.
SSYC Member Leif Sigmond Wins 2010 Patent Cup Regatta
Led by SSYC member and skipper Leif Sigmond, a partner at McDonnell Boehnen Hulbert & Berghoff LLP, the United States team earned a first place at the 2010 Patent Cup sailing regatta held June 3-6 off the island of Marstrand in Sweden. In the five races that the U.S. team participated, the team earned four first place finishes and a second place finish. In addition, the U.S. team won the round-the-island race.
Twelve teams representing various countries, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. This was the fourth time that Sigmond participated in the Patent Cup. "Representing the United States in this international regatta was an honor for our whole team," said Mr. Sigmond. "Participating in this regatta over the years has provided the opportunity to meet many great people in the global patent community and make life-long friends.
06 Jun - Championship Series Fever Grips SSYC
No, it's not the Flyers, nor those lads in Green from up north - it's the 2010 SSYC Championship Series. Open to club members, this Sunday at 13:00 Hrs. the annual battle to be best in class begins. Skipper's Meeting is at 12:30 Hrs. So be ready, because some people take preparation for the season very, very seriously. In fact, they will move mountains - or at least boats - even if it takes using heavy machinery - just to get into top shape. Wow. Now that's focus.
23 May - New Member Regatta a Family Affair
The 2010 New Member Regatta is always a great deal of fun but with 12 knots of breeze on a cool, overcast day we all wondered - smiles or frowns? Well, in our hearts we probably knew that our hardy Flying Scot fleet would treat our new members to a great day on the water. Sure, we had a good breeze and a bit of damp, but that was nothing compared to the smiles, laughs and good times had while we had three, quick fun races to introduce folks -new and prospective - to what we do best at SSYC - sail small boats. A wonderful spread, coffee, awards all around, and the day was complete. A big shout out to Ainsley VanWinkle-Hilfiker for organizing, PRO Leighton Waters, Doug Milnes for rallying the Scot fleet and all the Scot sailors and members who volunteered on and off the water. It was great afternoon and the start of a great season. Welcome to all!
08 May - SSYC Spring Laser Regatta Blows Them Away
This year's spring Laser Regatta had it all - from 5 knots to 25 knots - and through it all our fleet of intrepid sailors left it all on the course. With the weather expected to worsen, PRO Clauss raced five back to back races, making for a challenging day in the boat. And as the breeze freshened, a very competitive fleet began to feel the effects of a long winter's nap. In the end, all had a fantastic time, Fleet Captain Anita Waters and Mom Anita Waters put on a great spread, the Commodore spread some great cheer as he handed out awards and the competitors, though tired, had a good many smirks on their respective faces.
18 Apr - Spring Series Gets a Cold, Fast Start
It was spray gear and stocking cap weather but a good group of hardy sailors made the effort and were rewarded with a great day of sailing on the river. Four classes launched and the race committee did a bang up job of getting in some clean, quick jaunts around the buoys. Chair Kelly Zweig extends her thanks to PRO Doug Milnes and all the rescue boat teams for a fantastic job and wants to remind all sailors that wearing the right gear is critical - particularly for our younger sailors. Remember juniors (and seniors) - wet suits/dry suits and spray gear are a must! The Spring Series wraps on May 16.
17 Apr - Fireside Cocktails - Warming Things Up in Anticipation
We have a fine season ahead and there's nothing like a cozy fire, fine food, good music and wonderful friends to start out the year. The Social King - Phil Arnheiter and his court put on a wonderful first event in the clubhouse. While the wind blew outside, the sound of halyards clanging, the smell of wood burning and the good cheer all around reminded us of why SSYC is such a special place. "The King" - no, not that King - although there is a similarity - wishes to send a big thanks out to Cathy Brinkman for her prep, along with Sue DeSantis, Mike Eager, Jeff Quinn, Walter Burrell, Doug Milnes, PC Alan Schneider, Betty Rugg, our Commodore Mike Lyttle ahd his lovely wife Holly. Also a special thanks goes to Heidi Eberhard and her guest James (one name - like "The Rock") as well as the power behind the throne - Robin Arnheiter for bringing it all together in spectacular fashion.
20 Mar - Commodore's Reception was Hot, Hot, Hot!
It was a hot night - both outdoors and indoors, as Commodore Mike and Holly Lyttle hosted a fabulous soiree to kick off the season. Cocktails, a great buffet, good company and the cool sounds of the Thom White Band made it a great night out. Wow, who wouldn't want to sail with us when the Commodore's first instinct is to lead the conga line? Again, senior social chair Phil Arnheiter sends a big thank you out to Gail Van Winkle, Fred Beshore, Ainsley Van Winkle-Hilfker, Doug Milnes, Liz Gearon, Holly Lyttle and the lovely and charming Robin Arnheiter for all of their help in making the Commodore's Reception such an enjoyable evening!
20 Mar - SSYC Meets This Old House
