2017 Junior Sailing Instructors

SSYC offers classes for beginner, intermediate, and advanced sailors. Boats used in our program include Optimists, 420s FJs, N-10s and Lasers.

SSYC instructors have many years of experience in several classes of boats, working with all ages and levels of sailors from beginners to advanced racers. In addition, all SSYC instructors are NJ power-boat, CPR and first-aid certified and many return each year helping us maintain a consistently successful program.

We're so excited to have Kelly as our Head Instructor in 2017. As we finalize our 2017 staff, we'll replace instructors from 2016.

Kelly Brinton - 2017 Head Instructor

Kelly grew up taking sailing lessons at SSYC. She loved it so much she decided to stay! She has been continuously involved as both an instructor and head instructor for many years, she also has daughter who has gone through the program. Due to Kelly’s experiences she understands the program from perspective of a student who went through it, the parent of a student and a long time instructor. In Kelly’s words, “it's so great that my sailors learn new skills, and succeed on the race course, but I'm not doing my job if they aren't having fun”. In the non-sailing season she is a kindergarten teacher in a local area school. Kelly has enjoyed both competitive and leisure sailing in several classes of boats including the Comet, Laser, 420 and, for those of you who have been around long enough to remember the class, Blue Jay. Kelly can always be found cheering for beginner sailors just beginning to get their feet wet.

Coleen Ross

Coleen began sailing at the age of 9 at Raritan Yacht Club, and soon began racing all over NJ and the east coast. After graduating Optis, she started sailing Laser 4.7 and Radial, joining SSYC's Laser Race Team last year. Coleen was NJ's JY15 State Champion in 2012, and has helped both adults and other junior sailors learn how to sail the boat in both summer and winter seasons. Despite focusing mostly Lasers, Coleen has also raced extensively on JY 15's, J/109's, J/105's, Beneteau 36.7's, and Melges 32's. She graduated from the Ranney School in 2015 and how races for Northeastern University's sailing team.

Mari Patient - Beginner, Novice Puddle Duck

Mari began sailing at the Riverton Yacht Club's Junior Sail Camp at the age of 8. She participated in this program until she was 13, when she started working as a CIT in this same program. Mari races J22s in the summer and leisure sails 420s. This will be her first year involved in the SSYC program as she volunteers her time over the summer to satisfy her volunteer commitment for the National Honor Society! Mari is very excited to be a part of our awesome program and we are happy and proud to have her on board!

TBD Instructor

Another SSYC instructor to be posted shortly.

Harry Ricker - Opti Beginners Instructor

Harry began sailing at SSYC when he was 8 years old, advancing from Outstanding Novice to Opti Race Team. Harry has raced for SSYC for 8 Years and currently sails for Rumson-Fair Haven High School in 420's & F-J's. He is looking forward to his first year of teaching this summer where he learned to sail.

Sean Crabb - Opti Race Coach

Sean started sailing at the Toms River Yacht Club's junior summer program when he was 9 years old. As he grew older into the sport, he joined an optimist racing team out of Seaside Park Yacht Club. There he learned much more to be able to successfully compete in national and international regattas. After optis, he continued to race in lasers and 420s over the last four years. As the Opti Racing Coach this summer, he is excited and motivated to push towards a goal for successful racing at a highly competetive level..
